Dump Truck: Payload, Body Volume and Haul Road Duty

A dump truck hauls ore, waste and construction fill from the face to the crusher, dump or fill. Tanzanian small mines and contractors typically run 10–30 tonne rigid trucks or 25–40 tonne articulated dump trucks (ADTs). Payload must match the loading excavator: a truck that takes more than five to six bucket passes is too big for the loader, and a truck that fills in two passes is cycling half-empty. Haul-road quality governs speed, tyre life and fuel more than the truck brochure does.

Dump Truck Specifications

The figures below describe typical industry specifications for this class of equipment rather than a single fixed model. Use them to scope a requirement, then confirm exact figures against the supplied unit before purchase.

What a Dump Truck Is Used For

  • Ore and waste haulage from pit to plant or dump
  • Quarry stone haulage
  • Mine road, pad and tailings-dam construction
  • Overburden stripping
  • Civil bulk earthworks

Maintenance Schedule

Most premature failures in this equipment class trace back to a missed routine check rather than a design fault. The intervals below are a practical starting schedule; adjust them to your duty cycle and the manufacturer manual.

Recommended maintenance intervals
IntervalTask
Every shiftTyre inspection, body-liner check, hoist function and brake test; drain air tanks.
DailyEngine oil, coolant and fuel-water separator; inspect hoist cylinders for leaks.
250 hEngine oil and filters; grease chassis and hoist pivots.
500 hTransmission and differential oil levels; brake lining inspection.
AnnuallyBody-liner thickness survey; retarder and brake recertification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rigid or articulated dump truck?

Rigid trucks are cheaper per tonne on good, relatively flat haul roads and suit established pits. Articulated trucks (ADTs) keep moving on steep, wet or poorly built roads and on greenfield sites, at higher fuel burn and tyre cost. Most new Tanzanian pits start on ADTs or 6×4 tippers and only justify rigid mining trucks once the haul road is built properly.

How do I match a dump truck to an excavator?

Target three to six bucket passes to fill. Calculate: truck body volume ÷ bucket payload. A 1.0 m³ excavator bucket into an 18 m³ truck is too many passes; the truck waits. A 2.2 m³ bucket into a 10 m³ truck overfills and spills. Match them as a pair, not as two separate purchases.

Why do dump-truck tyres fail so fast?

Haul-road rock, underinflation and overloading. A 10% underinflation can cut tyre life in half. Grade, drainage and a clean running surface are cheaper than a new set of E4 tyres. Check pressure cold, every morning.
