Motor Grader: Blade, Horsepower and Haul-Road Maintenance

A motor grader is a long-wheelbase machine with a mid-mounted blade used to cut, spread and finish roads. On a mine it is the machine that keeps haul roads shaped, drained and fast; on construction it finishes formation before compaction. A 140–200 horsepower grader with a 3.7–4.3 m blade is the usual Tanzanian specification. Without one, haul roads corrugate, pond and destroy truck tyres — which is why graders often pay for themselves in tyre savings alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a mine haul road be graded?

As often as corrugations start to form, which on a busy laterite haul can be daily in the dry season and after every rain in the wet. A scheduled daily pass is cheaper than waiting for the road to fail. Watering plus grading plus compaction is the actual system; grading a dry, loose surface just moves dust.

Why does my grader leave a washboard surface?

Speed too high, blade too aggressive, or no moisture in the wearing course. Corrugations are a resonance between tyre bounce and a dry, poorly graded surface. Slow down, take a lighter cut, and add water. A grader cannot fix a road that has no wearing-course material left.

Do I need all-wheel drive?

Useful in sand, wet laterite and on steep formation work. On a firm, well-built haul road tandem drive is enough. Specify AWD if the same machine will also build new roads in the wet season.
