Wheel Loader Specifications
The figures below describe typical industry specifications for this class of equipment rather than a single fixed model. Use them to scope a requirement, then confirm exact figures against the supplied unit before purchase.
| Specification | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Bucket capacity | 1.5–6 m³ for small to mid mine and quarry duty |
| Operating load (full turn) | 3–12 t depending on class |
| Engine power | 80–250 kW |
| Dump height | 2.7–3.4 m, must clear the truck body |
| Tyres | Radial L3–L5; L5 for rock and quarry |
| Drive | 4-wheel drive, torque-converter powershift or HST |
| Fuel consumption | 12–30 L/h |
| Cycle on stockpile | Typically 25–40 seconds load-dump-return |
| Cab | ROPS/FOPS, air-conditioned |
| Weighing | Optional onboard payload scale, ±1–2% |
What a Wheel Loader Is Used For
- Loading dump trucks from stockpiles
- Feeding jaw crushers and hoppers
- Rehandling mill feed and concentrate
- Yard, workshop and camp material handling
- Road aggregate placement
Maintenance Schedule
Most premature failures in this equipment class trace back to a missed routine check rather than a design fault. The intervals below are a practical starting schedule; adjust them to your duty cycle and the manufacturer manual.
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Every shift | Check tyre pressure and cuts; inspect bucket cutting edge and hinge pins; look for hydraulic leaks. |
| Daily | Grease articulation joint, bucket pins and driveshaft; clean cooler cores. |
| 250 h | Engine oil and filters; inspect articulation bearings for play. |
| 500 h | Transmission and axle oil level; fuel filters. |
| 2,000 h | Transmission oil change; inspect rims and tyre carcasses. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Loader or excavator for feeding a crusher?
A loader is faster and cheaper per tonne on a level pad with a prepared stockpile. An excavator wins if the feed is a high face, the ground is soft, or you also need to dig. Many Tanzanian plants use a loader on the pad and keep an excavator for the pit.
What dump height do I need?
Higher than the truck body or hopper you will load, with margin. A loader that cannot clear a 30-tonne dump body is a wasted machine. Measure the truck, then add at least 300 mm.
Which tyres for rock?
L5 rock radials, not L3 construction tyres. Rock cuts sidewalls and L3 carcasses fail in weeks on a Geita-style abrasive pad. Tyres are often the largest running cost after fuel, so specify them with the machine, not as an afterthought.
