Hammer Mill: Gold Ore Crushing Specs and Screen Size

A hammer mill crushes ore by repeatedly striking it with swinging hammers against a breaker plate and a discharge screen. Diesel-driven 2–8 t/h units are widely used on Tanzanian small gold operations because they need no three-phase power and take jaw-crusher product down to mill or table feed in one step. Hammers and screens are the wear items; abrasive quartz-rich Geita ore can consume a set of hammers in days, so wear-part cost belongs in the operating model from the start.

Hammer Mill Specifications

The figures below describe typical industry specifications for this class of equipment rather than a single fixed model. Use them to scope a requirement, then confirm exact figures against the supplied unit before purchase.

Typical specification range for the Hammer Mill
SpecificationTypical value
Throughput1–15 t/h for small-scale gold duty
Feed size≤30–50 mm typical; some diesel units take 100–150 mm
Discharge screen0.8–12 mm slotted or round, interchangeable
DriveElectric 7.5–45 kW, or 10–30 hp diesel
Rotor speed1,500–3,000 rpm
HammersManganese or chrome, reversible
Moisture limitGenerally <8–10%; wet sticky feed blinds the screen
Fuel (diesel units)3–8 L/h

What a Hammer Mill Is Used For

  • Small-scale hard-rock gold crushing
  • Recrushing jaw product ahead of a shaking table
  • Sample preparation
  • Dry crushing where water for milling is scarce

Maintenance Schedule

Most premature failures in this equipment class trace back to a missed routine check rather than a design fault. The intervals below are a practical starting schedule; adjust them to your duty cycle and the manufacturer manual.

Recommended maintenance intervals
IntervalTask
Every shiftCheck for unusual vibration; inspect screen for blinding or holes; confirm feed is not oversize.
DailyInspect hammers and breaker plate; reverse hammers when one edge is worn.
WeeklyBearing temperature and lubrication; inspect rotor pins.
On wearReplace hammers as a set to keep the rotor in balance. Mixing new and worn hammers destroys bearings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hammer mill or ball mill for small-scale gold?

A hammer mill is a crusher, not a mill. It gets rock down to millimetres; a ball mill or wet pan mill gets it to the microns needed to liberate gold. Use a hammer mill after a jaw and before gravity recovery when you do not yet have a ball mill, or as a dry crushing step. It does not replace grinding on hard-rock ore.

Why does my hammer mill screen blind?

Wet or clayey feed, or a screen too fine for the moisture. Hammer mills are dry crushers. If the ore is wet, dry it, blend it, or switch to a wet mill. A blinded screen overloads the rotor and trips or breaks hammers.

How long do hammers last?

From a few days in abrasive quartz-rich ore to several weeks in softer oxide. Track tonnes per set. Reverse them once, then replace the full set. Unbalanced rotors are the usual cause of bearing failure.
