What a Backhoe Loader Is Used For
- Trenching for pipes, cables and drainage
- Small-scale loading of tippers
- Plant and camp construction
- Utility work around a processing plant
- Breaker duty on oversize near the crusher
Maintenance Schedule
Most premature failures in this equipment class trace back to a missed routine check rather than a design fault. The intervals below are a practical starting schedule; adjust them to your duty cycle and the manufacturer manual.
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Every shift | Check hydraulic oil, loader and backhoe pins, tyre pressures and stabiliser feet. |
| Daily | Grease kingposts, boom, dipper and loader arms; drain fuel-water separator. |
| 250 h | Engine oil and filters; inspect kingpost bush. |
| 500 h | Hydraulic filters; axle oil levels; brake inspection. |
| Annually | Kingpost rebuild as required; the swing bush is the characteristic wear item. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a backhoe replace an excavator on a mine?
For trenching, plant construction and odd jobs, yes. For production loading of ore, no. Digging force, reach and cycle time are a fraction of a 20-tonne excavator, and the chassis is not built for continuous pit duty. Treat it as the site utility machine, not the production loader.
2WD or 4WD?
4WD. Tanzanian sites are laterite, sand and wet-season mud. A 2WD backhoe spends half its life being towed or spinning the rear tyres. The price gap is small compared with the downtime.
What is the kingpost and why does it wear?
The vertical pivot the backhoe swings on. It takes every digging side-load. Worn kingpost bushes show as sloppy swing and lost digging precision. Grease it every shift; rebuild it before the housing itself is ovalised.
